I regret to have to inform you of the death of QMSI George (MAC) McCabe. APTC. I was informed today by a former member of the APTC that George passed away at his home in Norwich.
Mac Mc Cabe came to 3 RGJ as the Army Physical Training Corps Instructor when the BN was stationed there in the late 60's. He was a very popular man througout the battalion and I know that he loved his time with us. Talking to him in later years he often spoke of his fondness of the Green Jackets. I am sure that members of the WO's and Sergeants mess of that time will confirm his popularity within the mess.
He certainly was an excellent PT corps man and certainly kept the whole battalion fit. His circuit traing lessons were legendary and his own style of teaching was something to behold.
He made great strides with the Football team and he gave up a lot of time to make them as good as they were. He held an FA coacing badge which was no mean fete.. Something of which he was very proud and rightly so.
His great love was Boxing. He was a top ABA coach and was a really great motivator.
When he first came to us he formed the Boxing team. We did have some good boxers at the time but had never really put ourselves on the ARMY boxing map as a team. George changed all that in a most amazing way. His training methods and his talent at bringing the best out of people transformed the boxing team into CHAMPIONS. The team smashed everyone in their way in 1969. Victory after victory came our way. Those boxing nights in Germany were just fantastic. Hundreds of mad Green Jackets screaming the team on. Boxing took over everything. We were great. Unstoppable. After convincingly beating every team that was put in our way, in fact, beating one poor unfortunate Royal Artillery team 11- 0 and I don't think there was one bout that lasted the three rounds, we reached the BAOR final. We met the Glosters a good boxing regiment in the final in Berlin. We beat them and became BAOR champions. This was undoubtedly all down to the knowledge and sheer determination of George McCabe. The final of the ARMY TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS had us fighting the KINGS REGIMENT. They had ruled boxing for years and were thought unbeatable. George Mc Cabe moved the team around moving boxers between various weight categories to enable us to beat them. On that famous night in Celle when a Green Jacket team became champions of the whole British Army it was just fantastic. THANKS GEORGE.
On a personal note George McCabe, through his training, belief in me and his motivational skills took me to 5 Army and Combined Services Individual titles and thanks to him I represented my country 9 times. THANKS GEORGE.
Rest in Peace George you were a legend, thanks for giving us the best times to remember. It was great to see you at the reunion a few years back. My sincere condolences to your family George.

RE: Death of QMSI George (MAC) McCabe. APTC - Attached 3RGJ
Rip Mc One hell of a great motivator as a PTI. You certainly did us proud in the boxing as you certainly gave us a great boxing team of 68/69 in Celle and also when we were in Cyprus 70/71
Not forgetting that brilliant Football Team of 68/69 again when we were in Celle
QMSI George MacCabe, gave our Regiment some fantastic nights of Boxing, our supporters always filled the Battalions coaches & many more shared cars to get to the events, & like the team our support was brilliant, the Green Jackets are famous & he added to that with the success of the Regiments Boxing encounters,
He did his best with the Battalion Football team, he bought to the football team Tactics & proper training, most of us just played football in our Streets, prior to joining the Green Jackets, & knew nothing about proper training, & In civvi street i had success using some of his ideas while managing football teams,
Sad news and a great loss to so many, Mac was inspirational and gave so many of us that inner confidence that was missing. I still have in pride of place in my study the photograph of that football team in Celle that did so well under his guidance. Truscott, Gibbons, Lewis, Ron Cassidy(Manager), Mac McCabe, Washington, Brum, Carson, Gray, Frost, Munro, Dawson, Hansford and Mizon.
I was probrably one of the very few that knew George before he came to the 3rd Bn as I knew him in the Far East when he was with an RA regiment, he was looking their boxing team but was very frustrated because they were not up to the standards that he wanted or in fact that he demanded. When he joined us he recruited myself, Frankie Short, Ray Brennan, Pat Burden and 1 other whose name eludes me. When I was on the PT staff at the depot he had said to me that if anybody that looks decent as a boxer to see that he gets sent to 3RGJ, as a result we got the likes of Ted Case, Ossie Oswald, Vince Halpin, Jake Cheetham and Brian Ewin. So as you can see the influence that Mac had throughout the whole of the Regiment was very strong and that sums his character A GREAT man.
So sleep well George I am sure you will be missed by many not just us green jobs.
What sad news, no one in 3RGJ will forget Mac McCabe, who put the 3RGJ on the sporting map. what he did for the Battalion Boxing team will never be forgotten. my two sons, Andrew & Adrian well remember the times, when the team was in action. and singing ZIGGER-ZAGGER -OHO-OHO. Sincere condolences to the family. RIP George.
