GAP    After retiring from the Army, Johnny took over GAP (Gap Activity Projects), a charity dedicated to international volunteering. Over 14 years he rebuilt GAP from near obsolescence to an international organisation responsible for providing vital volunteer support across an array of services including teaching, health care and environmental work. At its peak GAP operated in 35 countries. Through Johnnys tireless dedication, GAP created work opportunities for thousands of young volunteers, both Foreign and British. Initially these volunteers were all privately educated English men, but by the end GAP sustained a healthy mixture of male and female from every social stratum. They in turn provided support for those in real need. Johnny was truly the pioneer of the GAP year.

IN EARLY JUNE 1958, JUST AS I HAD FINISHED MY BASIC TRAINING, I WAS PICKED UP AT THE FRONT

GATE OF PENINSULA BARRACKS BY CAPT. J.R.CORNELL AND DRIVEN TO HYDE PARK BARRACKS, WHERE

HE WAS STATIONED AS ADC. TO FIELD MARSHALL SIR FRANCIS FESTING, THE THEN CHIEF OF THE

IMPERIAL GENERAL STAFF.

I WAS TO BE HIS BATMAN, A POSITION I HAD NEVER CONTEMPLATED. AS FAR AS I KNEW, AS A BOG-TROTTING

IRISHMAN(READ BOY), BATMEN EITHER PLAYED CRICKET OR WORE A CAPE AND A MASK.

HOWEVER, IF I HAD TO BE A BATMAN AGAIN, IT WOULD BE FOR JOHN CORNELL.

THE MAN WAS AN ABSOLUTE GENTLEMAN IN EVERY RESPECT, AND NOT ONLY TREATED ME WITH

DIGNITY, BUT ALSO EQUIPPED ME WITH KNOWLEDGE THAT ENABLED ME TO START OUT, AND LIVE MY

LIFE, MUCH, MUCH BETTER THAN I OTHERWISE WOULD HAVE.

CAROLINE,EVEN BAD NEWS TRAVELS SLOWLY TO THE NETHER REIGONS OF SOUTHERN VIRGINIA, OTHERWISE

I WOULD HAVE MADE ARRANGEMENTS  TO ATTEND. PLEASE ACCEPT MY HEART-FELT CONDOLENCES. YOU

MARRIED A WONDERFUL MAN. BUT YOU KNOW THAT.

JOHN (JOHNNY Mc)Mc MULLAN.

P.S. I NEVER DID GET THAT HAIRCUT WHICH HE RECOMMENDED ON OUR LAST MEETING IN WINCHESTER CATHEDRAL.

I am John's son David's estate manager on the outskirts of Andover. I met John on several occasions and he always had time to chat. The most memorable was when the children's nanny ran over the family's dog. As I was local I asked John to deal with the nanny whilst I took the dog to the nearest vet. We also exchanged several army tales as I was a WO11(SSM)RE.

I would like to send my condolences to the whole family.

Well remember John in Wuppertal as Adjutant. Riding his horse across the square when battalion was on parade and saying " There are two things you need to do before coming on parade. One - have a hearty breakfast   and  Two - have a good sh.. !

Very likeable man.
