Lloyd Maj RA (Robert Alastair) late KRRC [245324]

Robert Alastair Lloyd (RAL) died on 16 January 2014 peacefully at home, aged 90. A service of thanksgiving will be held at 2.30 pm on Saturday 29 March at Holy Trinity Church, Littlebury, CB11 4TD, followed by tea at St Mark's College, Audley End, CB11 4JD. In Sept 1942 he joined 7 KRRC in Yeaden Nr Leeds. With 2 KRRCon ops in Holland and Germany, crossing the Rhine, Aller, Weser & Elbe ended War on the outskirts of Hamburg. Subsequently moved to Denmark to round up enemy stragglers.On return to the UK was based at Crowborough trained for joint USA/British for the invasion of Japan which never came off. Oct 45 Bn posted to Tripoli for garrison & peacekeeping duties with Dets in Gaza/Palestine, Trans Jordan. RAL lunched in the King David Hotel, Jerusalem the day before it was blown up utterly destroying it. In Nov 1946 returned to UK for demob. Subsequently joined the Queens Westminsters Rifles till 1955 initially as a Carrier Pl Comd, OC C Coy & Band Pres and ultimately as OC B Coy. On demob commenced a career in shipping with Ellerman Lines starting as a Junior Clerk and rising to be a director of Ellerman & Bucknall, retiring in 1982 as Chairman of Ellerman City Liners. He was among the pioneers of international container transportation in the 1960s. In retirement he devoted his time to charitable works.
