I'm very saddened to hear the news of L/Cpl "Choggie" Coleman's passing. I had the priveledge of knowing Choggie during our time in 3RGJ,and he was truly a comrade who was held in very high esteem by all of his fellow Riflemen, and those who came into contact with him. No more will we hear his wonderful mimicry of the monkey. His was a life cut all too tragically short.  He was a morale booster par excellance to his fellow riflemen and his quickwittedness knew no bounds. Another "great character"goes to join the great Green Jacket muster in the sky.
Rest well old friend and God bless. We will all meet up again soon for the big Reunion.

Choggie was lovely bloke, modest, witty and great fun.
Wasn't it he who had a pet chicken on a string in Malaya?
If it wasn't, there are a million other stories to look back upon.
Truly an iconic Rfn.

Johnny Cash, at the first meeting with his son-in-law to be, (who was well oiled and gobby), said to him:
'Son, I don't know you well enough to miss you if you were gone.'

Everyone who knew Choggie will miss him - and being modest, it's probably something I doubt he would have even been aware of.

Where do you start? Choggie could be equally brilliant and frustrating as a mate.  He always asked after the family sincerely, and nearly always refused help when it was obviously required.  There are far too many anecdotes for here and I am sure they will be raised at the send off.  Those of us that live locally saw him as regularly as possible, possibly not enough. A most wonderful character whom once met, never forgotten. I, for one, will miss him greatly as nobody else told me to eff off as much as him! Hopefully alone no longer. God bless and look after you Chog.

Choggie was a true gentleman with a cutting wit and wonderful nature. I first met him at the depot when he was my PTI and will forever remember him calling the under achievers "toilets"

His ability to go on the lash until dark o'clock in the morning and then take a bunch of nigs on a beasting session are legendary. Along with his ability to remember everybodies name, even if he had not seen them in years.

A tuely lovelly bloke, the circumstances of his death are incredibly sad, I only hope that he has some knowledge of the esteem that so many held him in and the brotherly love that those from the 3rd and the wider Regiment felt for him.

This is a man that words alone could never do justice for. I feel both very sad at his passing and also extremely fortunate to have known him.

Choggie, if there is a bar where you are now, don't sit alone anymore and have a drink on me.

You will be sadly missed.

Chris

Choggie Coleman - Farewell Choggie as everyone has already said you really were a true character from 3 RGJ.  I hope I have not got this story confused with someone else, but I seem to remember Choggie getting the sling of his SLR caught in a horse riding Life Guards boot, who laughed and rode off.  Little did he know Choggie was a PEI and fit, Choggie pulled back, the horse took off and the Life Guard lay on the tarmac!  Circa Cambridge/London 1980 I think.

Sorry to hear about the death of Choggy. I had the privalage of knowing Choggy whilst serving with him in Berlin. We boxed together, we drank together. I remember when we were on the boxing team, we used to get up at five in the morning for training. Choggy stayed in bed because he had been out the night before. Staff Ord (The Boss) went to the block and dragged him over to the gym, he told the rest of the boxing team to leave, as we were leaving we looked into the window and seen Staff putting choggy through the paces for about an hour. Choggy came over to the block absolutely shattered, and the first thing out of his mouth was "God I could do with a drink." We all laughed. R.I.P. mate

Just heard the very sad news about Choggie. I was looking for him last year in Winchester with tricky, we couldn't find him which left my heart heavy. What a genuine uncomplaining man who taught so many young riflemen, by example, the true love of the regiment and your mates. Choggie I will shed a tear and raise a glass to you. Vale mate.

Very sad news that "Choggie" has gone to the re-org in heaven. He was part of Winchesters RGJ history till the end a true Chosen Man. A fantastic character known by many many Green Jackets. It Will take some time to realise you are gone, only saw and spoke to you in Macdonalds two weeks ago, we laughed, and talked about our times and Bn times , you are an all rounder to me.. God Bless...Impact Cut...Anti Tanks...3 RGJ ..
