Update..

A British soldier killed in action in southern Afghanistan has been named by the Ministry of Defence.

Corporal Daniel 'Danny' Nield, 31, from 1st Battalion (The Rifles), was killed on Friday.

Cpl Nield, from Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, died from injuries sustained during an exchange of fire while on a joint UK and Afghan National Army patrol north of Musa Qala, in Helmand Province.

His death takes the total number of British servicemen and women killed since the start of operations began in 2001 to 143.

He is the sixth soldier to die in Afghanistan so far this year.

Lieutenant Colonel Joe Cavanagh, Commanding Officer, of 1 Rifles said Cpl Nield had a formidable sense of humour.

Paying tribute to him, he said: "He was a popular Rifleman, full of character and at the top of his profession; revelling in the qualifications and experience in battle-winning skills that always took him to the front of the battle.

"I will remember him speaking confidently, convincingly, and provocatively - and with humour - about such matters from the seat of a borrowed quad bike in the sunshine in his dusty District Centre during a short but well-earned break between tasks."

He added: "His enthusiasm for his profession was as memorable as his 'Zap' moustache and he was full of ideas on how new talent should be identified and new techniques developed.

"He was a brave man doing vital work; we are lucky to have known and served with him, and poorer now he has died."

Defence Secretary John Hutton added: "Corporal Nield was clearly an extremely professional Rifleman who was making a real difference in bringing stability to Afghanistan.

"I know he will be sorely missed by all his colleagues. My thoughts are with his family and his friends at this very sad time."

More information will be Posted by Steve later
