our sincere condolences to annmarie andy and family on there sad loss our thoughts are with you at this time i had the good fortune off bumping into (spener) at winchester and had some good times we where going to meet up for a pint soon but will make it another time mate another great greenjacket to watch over us from high on the hill rip as the saying goes old soldiers never die they only fade away but in our hearts theres always a place for you stay.
Another stalwart has left us, a man who was so full of fun. Eric told a story of when he was the COs (Lt Col Bramall) driver and was returning to camp when the CO said to stop the car and change places with him, so Eric gets in the back and the CO drives through the gates when the RSM ( Dad Fee) approached and gave Eric the smartest of salutes. He was not very happy when saw who he was saluting but they all had a good laugh about it.
To give you an idea of the kind of Man Eric was 2 years ago I was at the funeral of George Humphries in Liverpool and I got talking to Eric and said that I didnt know you knew George as they were from different Bns, he said I didnt know him but we are all Green Jackets so I thought I would pay my respects. RIP my friend and condolences to your family. FRED
One of the funniest guys I have ever met. Never ever saw him miserable, always able to raise a chuckle. RIP Eric, you'll have 'em in fits wherever you are.
Hello, I am posting to Thank you all for your very kind and sincere words, they mean a lot. It is very comforting to read your posts and memories of my Dad. I know he loved the Greenjackets which were his second family.
I have come across a collection of photographs from his serving days which I am more than happy to be published on here if you would like them on the site.
As stated, anyone is welcome to attend the funeral and his wake which will be held at the Wellington Pub on Green Lane,Liverpool.
Anyone with any enquiries can contact Arthur Reed who has my email address.
I remember taking Eric and Ingrid to York for VE day, we had a few beers and a good old natter, it was time to observe the silence when a young guy walked past Eric who was stood rigid to attention.
Eric gave the guy a good old ear bashing this resulted in Eric ejecting his false teeth out on to the lap of the resident piano player, with great calm Eric walked over to the piano player and asked can you play the chatter natter flew chew, I rest my case.
When I received the call from Erics son in law saying Eric has passed away it was a shock to my system. For a brief moment time stopped. I thought Eric would be around forever.
When I go to reunions in Davies Street people always ask "hows Spencer getting on?" i would say " Eric is ok".
Going back to the days in British Guyana and Malaya in particular, morale was high and the MT section was no exception - Eric was a great influence in upholding morale.
You never knew what he was going to do next!
There are many stories one can tell about Eric - one that comes to mind is when Eric was a diving instructor in Malaya. One night he came into my room with a harpoon gun and asked me what I thought of it. I said it looks real, with that he pulled the trigger and the spear ended up inthe woodwork above my head! Eric came over - pulled it out - and went to bed. That was Eric for you!!!
Eric will be missed by his friends and family but also missed by his second family

Memories of Christmas day 1966 in Penang whilst eating lunch to hear a loud bang and loked out of the window to see that Eric had blown our dustbin up with firecrackers and to hear him chuckle with that scouse he he he!!
This happen whilst extremely heavily pregnant (baby born 6 Jan).
Eric attended Mick's funeral in 2000 and said a few words.
Unfortunately I will not be able to attend the funeral today as I have got family commitments but my thoughts will be with you at 1500hrs. Your memory will go on for many years to come, we will be chatting at reunions and your name will come up re some daft thing you had done and we will all be rolling about laughing.
I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all who have posted, sent beautiful cards and flowers/wreaths,made donations to my Dad's favourite charities' and to all those who attended his funeral and wake especially Chris Maguire and those who travelled a long distance to be there.
A big thank you to the RGJs' who attended and gave him the send off he deserved and would have wished for. You made his funeral a special one and it was an honour to have experienced it.
A big thank you to Mr Richard Frost and the Association for the beautiful wreath and words of condolences,it was very much appreciated and welcomed.
Last but not least,a very big thank you to Mr Arnie Steele who has been a pillar of support to the family and helped in any way he could in supporting the family during this very sad time.
My Dad will be greatly missed by us all but his memories will live on forever in our hearts and minds.
I have been trying for some time to find my old mates for a year and more. It saddens me that the first name i found was that of Eric's at such a sad time. I remember him from Penang and Germany. He always had a smile,or was about play some kind of joke on some poor innocent. I met him again when i returned from five years in Australia on my way to settle in California.Eric rounded up a couple of my old mates i hadn't seen in years Arnie Steel ,Eddie Campbell(who was on his way to Australia). After a few pints we decided to find were Marty Hammond lived, a few more pub stops and we found the place .It seemed that Marty wasn't home but we all pulled on the back door wich almost came off its hinges and all these clothes came tumbling out onto us, it turned out to be the back of Marty's closet and not the back door after all, we all laughed so hard I can still see Erics face trying to stuff the clothes back in and close the door at the same time. Good on you Eric, your the advanced party get every thing ready for the rest of us to follow, i'l hoist a few cold beers in your honour God bless you son. gbjohn44@msn.com
