Death of Punchy Mitchell - RB AND 3GJ
Permalink Closed

It is with great sadness that I announce the death of Michael (Punchy) Mitchell, RB and 3rd Green Jackets, who died on 22nd March 2010.

For those that remember him Punchy was a larger than life character who was truly a legend within his own lifetime and the stories of his antics during his service are the stuff of RB folklore!

Punchy will be cremated at Vinters Park Crematorium, Maidstone, Kent (ME14 5LG) at 11.00hrs on 9 April 2010 and regimental family are welcome to attend.

I too was saddened to hear of Punchy Mitchells  departure. He was one of the characters that you never forget and his 'antics' are indeed part of Regimental history.

What a character! Punchy's adventures were of the "you couldn't make it up" variety.

One famous story was during a Company Commanders block inspection. The OC looking in Punchy's locker at his wash kit, asked,

"Mitchell, where's your toothbrush?"
Punchy replied, "In me kitbag, sir."
OC, "In your kitbag, what's it doing in there?"
"Best place for it sir, it's wiv me teef!"

Punchy, as all who knew him were aware, didn't have a tooth in his head and never wore the full set of false ones the army had provided him.

I had a laugh at Trevor Anderson's messege about Punchy Mtchell's Teeth, well i can add to that, when the Battalion was in Fan Lin Hong Kong,  Punchy was in 11 plt C coy in a barrack room for four Riflemen, that  included Punchy, Brian Kennedy (keno) Ian Thompson ( tommo) & myself.  During a plt inspection the plt cmmander entered our room & the first to be inspected was punchy,  & there on punchy's bedside locker was his Teeth,  this time in a glass of water,  the officer said something like,  what on earth  is that,  punchy replied my teeth Sir i leave them overnight to soak the officer said yes very clean & moved on to the next Rifleman,   punchy was a very good boxer & so was the officer,  although it was officer & Rifleman they had that in common & our plt was run well.

Goodnight Punchy, rest in peace.

Another legend of a Green Jacket, for a Regiment we had a Divisions worth of characters, none more so than Punchy.

RIP punchy.

I had just arrived into the Bn in Colchester from the depot and was feeling pretty green, and was rather subdued at being amongst all of these experienced soldiers when into my room came this guy with no teeth. He said to me " are you Fred Hawkins " " yes " I replied, He then said that he had heard that I have got a suit and wanted to borrow it. When I pointed out that it was probrably far to small, he said not to worry. I was also told by a couple of the lads that this was Punchy and that it was best not to argue. So off he goes with my suit far to small. I was woken up at some unearthly hour by Punchy returning my suit minus a sleeve and one arm, he was kind enough to thank me and even put my suit back on a hangar, so kind.

A character of green and stories like this will be told for years to come at reunions.

Condolences to the family in particular Bill and Chris who I know very well.

What can one say? He was a pure and utter legend, and I was just talking of him a week ago. What a sad loss and I hope that he rests in peace along with all the others who have gone before.
