I did not have the pleasure of knowing Colin Green but, like most other Green Jackets, I've seen him perform many times as a bugle major Sounding retreat on Horse Guards Parade...
I can only think of one word which defines a man like Colin Green "Immaculate".
A true "Royal Green Jacket" who absolutely loved his regiment.
JUst like to say our thoughts go out to BM colin green, who was a great bugle major he was smart loved his job and brougth up a lot off buglers i was with him in the depot in 1982 as a bugler. The Last post goes out to another Rifleman. From Shady Lane
God Bless Colin, Heaven will be a better place - all those ex Green Jackets will now parade more happily - "Bugle Major - Sound the Advance" Rest in peace Colin you were a legend. Sincere condolences to his loved ones. Steve
Sad to here of the passing of a Green Jacket Legend. Colin was one of the reasons that I joined the Regiment. My dad took me to a Tattoo at Salford Rugby club when I was a kid. The Band and Bugles were there and after watching them I had chance to Chat with Colin. He was a true ambassador for the Regiment. Swift and Bold Colin.
It is with great sadness to hear the passing of Colin. Our paths crossed many times over the years during my bugle period and I have many wonderful memories of him from his pith helmet to those wonder handlebar whiskers. It was a privillage to have known and often worked with him. My condolences to his family. R.I.P mate till we meet again in the big counter march.
Very sad news about Colin he will never be forgotten He was a true icon, and dedicated to the Green Jackets,my thoughts go out to Billie and the family.RIP Boss. Bob Helm ex 2RGJ Bugles.
I seem to have known Colin Green forever. I have always had a deep respect for him despite his starting life in the 60th and in all our time of knowing each other it was always this banter that got us going for of course my heritage began in another remarkable regiment.
To my mind the Bugle-Major with his buglers as part of our bands with all their panache and expertise firmly placed the Royal Green Jackets into the public gaze and the plaudits poured in. Colin was and will long be remembered for not just being a bugle-major but an expert showman with a sense of humour that touched us all.
I remember as QM of the Rifle Depot shouting Bugle-Major sound Officers in Greatcoats and on Bicycles his reply Sir and promptly had his buglers sound a call, which I know not what-his immediate response to me trying to catch him out was, to top me! Quick of pace and quick of mind.
We will all have our memories but for me it was the man himself and how in his own indomitable way the contribution he made to our Regiment.
I can only echo the words of all those who have posted a message already on Bugle Major Green. He really did embody the sprit and essence of a Green Jacket Bugle Major, and his likes will never be seen again in my opinion.
Having served as one of his Cpls in the old Rifle Depot along with Scotty Muir, Dave Birch, Pete Monick and Ben Lyon and marched behind him on inummerable occasions, I witnessed his expertise, skill, professionalism and most of all his humor. He was always on the side of his blokes (if they were right of course!) and I remember an occasion when he ripped into a Highland Regiment Pipe Major who had been having a go at us when we were on a job in the US. That was a sight to see!
He loved 45rd & 52nd / 60th / RB banter and always seemed to strive to keep their identity in the Bugles, making sure all the blokes knew the unique calls of the Battalion they were heading for.
If I slipped up and called him 'Boss' (as we addressed our BMs in 3RGJ) he always used to poke me with his pipe, and with a mock look of disbelief and disgust on his face say 'Don't bring your bloody RB ways here Cpl Mannion!'
