I regret to announce the death of former RSM, 4RGJ, Frank Jones, who died suddenly whilst swimming in Auckland, New Zealand on 25th November 2011. Following his service as RSM Frank was subsequently commissioned from the ranks in 1988 and left the Army as a Captain.
Frank will be remembered within the Australasian Branch of the Association for trying to bring the ex Green Jackets in New Zealand together. A fine gentleman with a cutting wit, who will be sadly missed.
What terribly news, so hard to take in, such sadness on hearing of Franks passing.
We go back along way as do most of you; along with Pete 'Beefy' Fraser we were known as the 'Terribly Trio' but such a good team. We all three served in 'R' Coy and shared many 'incidents' during our tour in Belfast. Frank always said that I saved his life when I parked my 'Pig' under the first floor window of a house in Leeson St, that had attracted a large hostile mob, so that he and his 'brick' could jump out of the window and onto the 'Pig' roof and back to the safety of Albert St Mill.
Frank had a wonderful sense of humour and a great Mess Member. I was looking forward to seeing him in 2015 for the Reunion of the old 3GJ/RGJ
Our thoughts and prayers are with you Judith & Wendy from Gill and the Girls.
Stand easy Frank you have served well - God Bless You.
My deepest Condolences to Judith and Wendy. I got to know Frank very well when the Bn was stationed at Felixstowe. Met His family in Crosby when we went on leave.. and will always remember the gimmick that he thought of which was to wear two different Team colours, when ever Ipswich where at Home.. when we met up again in Ebrington Bks .it was great to see Frank again.. I just cant think of anything else to add about Frank, just it was a Pleasure and a priviledge to have met him and known him years ago.He will be sadly missed by all who knew Him. REST IN PEACE Frank.....
I was very shocked and saddened to learn of Franks untimely passing.I was lucky to have met up with Frank as an IJLB boy at Oswestry in 1962 and served together in the same platoon until we passed out in 1964.He was a natural soldier who made everything look so easy.We both ended up in 3 RGJ shooting team and Frank was always good to have around if you needed a bit of a lift.We stayed friends until I left the army in 1973 and then unfortunately lost touch.Frank eventually went on to reach the rank of Captain which did not surprise me in the least.I migrated to Australia in 1986 and was very excited to learn that he had joined the Australasian Branch and was living just across the water in New Zealand. We managed to meet up in April this year when he and Judith joined us in the Anzac Day parade. His great sense of humour and wit which he had become famous for had not faded over the years. There was a lot of laughter as Frank and I reminisced and very soon the years rolled away and we were young men again.I was fortunate to meet up with Franks lovely wife Judith for the first time and was struck by what a perfectly matched couple they were.
My sincere, heartfelt condolences go out to Judith and daughter Wendy at this terribly difficult time.
Very shocked and saddened to hear of the sad loss of Frank Jones. Always remember him for His wit and great sense of humour and always an excellent member of the Sgts Mess. I am sure that all those who had the pleasure of doing a sigs cadre with there time with 3 RGJ would always say that he was one of the best instructors to have around. RIP Frank

Very Sad News, Like Dave and fellow R Company members, Frank was one of the very best and a guy who I was certainly looking forward to meetng up with again. I'll always remember his sense of humour and fast draw - nearly every day in Springfield Road Police Station where we were room mates we had a fast draw competition with our brownings. It was only my laughter that prevented me from winning more. Our night in the Mess when the new RSM Ed Lilley arrived will remain our secret Frank!!! God Bless Mate - Condolences to Judith and Wendy Gordon & Jan Pilcher
My name is Paul. Frank (Phill as we knew him) worked for me in Auckland and I was with him when he passed. He was a great man with a razor wit and we will miss him immensely.
My name is Peter and I worked with Frank (Phil) as I knew him in Britomart. My very deepest condolences to his family and I pray for you at this very difficult time.
Phil was an absolute gentleman of the highest calibre, who I had the upmost respect for.His kind nature and razor sharp wit were second to none and will be sorely missed!.
Rest in Peace Frank old friend, what fun we had together in
2 RGJ, 4 RGJ and finally 1 RGJ. My sincere condolences are sent to Judith and family at this dreadul time. Steve.
To here of Franks death is a hard blow, he had such a long career with many different periods of his service, but the period that i will strongly remember him from is the Borneo campaign, & Felixstow during that time i never saw him lagging behind 5 mile runs every morning in Felixstow, he was always right there, & the many hill march's in Malaysia & Borneo, when you looked around during a breather there was Frank leaning forward up hill with his Big pack ready to push on again. we were in 11 plt C coy & since those days we have all kept together in some way even after 40 years, a group of 11 plt had a photo taken at one of the get togethers, Frank had a proper Liverpool witty humour. for me it is a sad tradedy, he was a proper Brother.
Frank was one of my oldest mates, we served in sigs platoon together and had many fairly liquid nights. I lost touch when I left the battalion but regained it when they came to Oakington.
My wife and I had dinner with Frank and Judith several times and had such good evenings. Like Robin, I agree that most has been said about him, and I echo all the sentiments.
We had only just got back into contact since his move to the land of sheep and I believe he had planned to return for the Borneo bash in 2015.
A grand bloke, genuine and warm. I will miss him. My thoughts are with Judith and his daughter.
Goodnight Frank, a real pleasure to have known you from Celle, through R Coy and beyond. Always sharp as a razor, willing to help when it was needed, and fun to be around. Would that there were a lot more like you.
So sad to hear of Franks' passing, i remember him at 2RGJ ,he had a fabulous sense of humour .He was such a kind gentleman. My condolences to his wife Judith and family.
During my time as the TQM 3RGJ in Celle, Frank was my TQMS and what a player he was. on the ball all the time, be it work or play. The Battalion had an outstanding Warrant Officer in Frank, and I thank him for all that he has done for our Regiment. My thoughts are with his home team at this very sad time
It is with a heavy heart that I read of the passing of Frank Jones. After two years at IJLB Oswestry, Frank was our Training Pl Sgt at the 'finishing school' (The Rifle Depot) and was a breath of fresh air. His laid back but professional manner was a revelation to us. He took the mickey mercilessly and got us "heavy" boys, in a short space of time, ready for the battalions. His guidance from the Boys world into the Man's world was done in such a humorous (and 3RGJ) way there was no overlap and his influence remains with me today. RIP Captain Jones and my deepest condolences to his loved ones
Frank was a superb Rifleman, Warrant Officer and was well deserved on gaining his comission. I remember many fond memories of him, his Liverpool humour was the thing I remember best, but most I remember never hearing him ever run anyone down. Absolute shock.
Sad news to read about Frank. He was a great section commander in R Coy NI 71 . Respect and a pleasure to patrol with him during those difficult times. A nicer man you wont find.
