It is with sadness that I have to advise you that Peter Lawless died yesterday ( 1740 17/08/12 ) at the age of 82. It was after a 2 year fight with cancers that he kept bouncing back from but beat him in the end, he passed away peacefully with his family around him. Prior to his illness Peter led a wonderful life with a loving family and many friends and as you all know his greatest past time was golf. Sadly the love of his life Enid had died some years back but he remained his vibrant self and we often remembered her fondly.

Major Peter Lawless (500047)

Peter Lawless died on Friday 17 August aged 82.
He had been fighting heroically against cancer for some time.

Peter Lawless served for some 44 years when combining his OR service and his later commissioned service mainly with 4(V) RGJ at Davies Street.

From National Service (1948/49) with the Oxf & Bucks LI and subsequent regular service with the Regt in Greece, Cyprus & Egypt he then saw service in Cowley Bks Oxford, Strensall and in Cyprus, as an instructor at RMA Sandhurst, a PSI with the Kenya Regt, local RSM in Borneo followed by service with 1GJ in Penang as a CSM and in Berlin as the RQMS.

As a WO1 he was initially the RSM of Bristol UOTC (1966-67), then the RSM at the Depot in Winchester (1967-69), followed by WO1 appointments on the Army Youth Team in Woolwich and latterly on the Central London Recruiting Team.

Peter Lawless was the recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal (MSM).

Commissioned in 1975 into 4(V) RGJ generations of Green Jackets, both regular and TA, will remember him and always be grateful for the huge amount of work he put into 4(V) RGJ in general and Davies Street and the London Club in particular.

Peter Lawless was always a courteous, helpful, charming and decent man and a great and proud supporter of his chosen regiment and its successor regiment.

In 2010 he published his memoires From Miner to Major (ISBN: 978-1-84104-503-0) a down to earth book with remarkably detailed recollections and an infectious and cheeky sense of humour.

His wife Enid predeceased him in 2007.

He is survived by his sons Ian & Graham.

It is with great sadness that we have heard of the passing of Peter, who was a great friend to both May and I when he was RSM at the Depot and later when we served with him at Davis St.

He was one of lifes real gentlemen who was always ready to help either by giving advice or assistance when necessary.

He will be sadly missed by all who new him. RIP Peter.

My deepest sympathy  go to peters family i remember him from 4 RGJ when he gave me a great deal of help

on my arrival many a psi will have had his help over many years rest in peace peter god bless

My sincere condolences to Peter Lawless's family on their sad loss. As has been said previously he was a true Green Jacket and a gentleman. A nicer bloke you couldn't wish to meet. When I was a nig at the Depot he was the RSM and was well respected by all who came into contact with him. Later when I did tours with 4 RGJ/5RGJ, Peter as a PSAO was a valuable source of information who was always willing to pass on his relevant experience and advice which made the job easier. Rest in Peace Peter. You will be sadly missed.

It is with great sadness that I learn of Peter's passing. I served with him at the Winchester in 1968. An inspirational RSM and not a bad cricketer either. My sincere condolences to his family. You would find a better bloke on a days march. RIP  Sir. No more parades today.

Good night my oldMucker, had some fun times with Peter at 4 RGJ. He always organised a trip to the races every year. They where great days.

A sad day with the passing of a legend and a true gentleman. Like many others I served with him in 4(v)RGJ at Davies Street. Rest in peace Peter.

The funeral was on Friday 31st and the sun shone brightly for dad on the day. I would like to thank all those who attended from the Regiment past and present and I know my Dad would have been honoured that you all came out in force. In particular my special thanks go to The Brogdens, Rev Colin Fox, JDVM and the Bugler who made my day with The Last Post.
