It is with great sadness to hear the passing on of C S M Newton.I remember him as CSM B Coy Tidworth & CSM St Patricks Camp Cyprus, when 1 R G J did a tour with the UN `1967/68.

On occasions I was his driver, on his many trips to Coral Bay and then into Katima Town (turkish Sector) for a meal.

  He was a real gentleman,

My best regards to all his family.

  God bless Joe Newton.

I served under Joe in Berlin, Tidworth and Cyprus when he was a CSjt and CSM.  He scared the daylights out of me, as to say I was the untidest ex Junior Leader from Oswestry would be an understatement.   But with Joe he was always fair.

Later, when 1 RGJ went to Northern Ireland as Spearhead Battalion, I skipped from Oswestry and rejoined the Battalion.  In the confusion no-one realised I had not been posted back.   I went with B Company to Armagh and worked out of the Police Station under Joe.  I could not have asked for a better man to work for.  He was the kindest, and nicest, boss I have had.   My final career was in the Diplomatic Service and Joe still stands out as the finest man I have ever worked for.  I respect none more.
