I heard today from Bob (Farmer) Hillier of the death of Carmen Kelly, wife of Cpl Mick Kelly. Those who served in 3 RGJ from '72-'77 in Shoebury and West Berlin might remember Mick, who was a clerk in the Orderly Room. Mick and Carmen were always very kind to single blokes like me and Bob, especially in the matter of Sunday lunch in Berlin, if the Corporal's Mess managed to close. Carmen did full justice to the ample food that could be had by families there, as it had to be stockpiled in huge quantities against the possibility that the Russians might try another blockade, and was therefore available cheaply. Mick left the Battalion in '77, I think, and they went to live in Southend, where Carmen died yesterday, 10th March.
Mick we are sorry to hear of your loss, R.I.P.Carmen, you will be fondly remembered for yours and Micks kindness to us single guys in Shoebury and especially in Berlin. Sincere condolences to all of your family and friends. Malcolm Don Donnison
