i first met bert in tidworth in 1968,we were speaking of mutual aquaintances and he said"hang on i think i`ve got a photo of him"he opened his locker and stepped smartly back as a stack of photos fell out,i said something along the lines of"you collect photos,do you? "something of an understatement, and the rest,as they say,is history, god bless bert, save us a good bed-space for when we turn up,my thoughts are with your family..swift and bold.
I'm very sorry to hear that Bert has finally succumbed to this terrible illness, my heartfelt condolences go out to his family.
You've certainly left your mark on the RGJ association, with your fantanstic contributions over the years, your photographic archive being the most prominent. I didn't know you very well Bert but you always had time to chat whenever I bumped into you.
Rest in peace "Mucker" and we'll all see you, and all the others at the bar up there...

PS: Please thank or curse Gordon 'Vash' Vacher for a Friday. This is because when he visited Bert in the Hospice a couple months ago, he asked "Bert can you remember funerals mid week play havoc with the work /shift patterns, especially when we want to celebrate your life and contribution to the Regiment." Bert faced me and said, "Billy, make sure that is sorted and don't make it early so the lads from up north don't have to set off too early." So Fellow Rifleman, I had my orders and that was that, he has his wishes. I hope to see as many as possible, Bert always made the effort for the RGJ's please try to make the same effort in attending, he deserves a good send off.
No flowers, donations please to 'Rifles Benevolent Fund' (was Riflemans Aid Society), this is Bert's wish, so let us make him proud of us and please give unstintingly.
Bert you were some Rifleman,a Loyal and Honest Friend and Mucker. You will be sadly missed.Renee and I offer our Sincere Condolences to Pat,Adam, sandra and to all his family. Rest in Peace Bert.
I do not think there is another person in our regiment that was more widely known by all, for his dedication to his beloved hobby, that of collecting photographs old, modern and new. It is also nice to see all the recollections of Bert's old friends. To Bert's family I send my deepest sympathy and to his friends the same. To Bert I would like to say thank you for what you have done for us all and allowing me to send some photographs that you added to your collection.
Rest easy Bert... You have left a legacy that will touch hundreds of families and Soldiers for years to come... There will be many fond memories that will be woken by your photographs and dedicated work for the Regiments..RB..KRRC..43rd & 52nd..The Royal Green Jackets ..and The Rifles.
May you have a joyous meeting with Jimmy R and the other Scallywags..
It's with great sadness to hear that Bert has passed on to the final RV, I send my sympathy to his wife and family, Having served with Bert for many years in 1RGJ apart from his marvelous collection of photos I will never forget seeing Bert eat a complete roast dinner in a loaf of bread, unlike most Riflemen Bert will never fade away but will live on in Regimental history with his photos. Rest in Peace, Bert
