It saddens me to inform you that our Brother Rifleman Joey Simpson died last night.
Joey joined as a boy soldier in the early 60's. He served in both the 3rd and 1st battalions. He was also, for a while, a training Sgt at the depot. Joey was a good lad and a fine Rifleman. He was my friend for more than 50 yrs. He passed away in his sleep after a short while in hospital.
Joe`s funeral service will take place on Friday 17th April at 12 noon at Francis De-Salla Church, Walton. A cremation will follow at Anfield Crematoriam at 1 pm. Anyone from Joe`s regimental family who wishes to attend should contact Gareth (Ginger) Dixon on 07976 743 470 for more information.
So sad to hear the news about Joe. Sincere condolences to family and friends. I'll always remember Joe as sharp minded and witted, and a sharp dresser. I remember the absolute fluke that we met Joe on the day of Joe Humphries funeral - at traffic lights on the East Lancs Highway!!! That was the last time I saw him to speak to. RIP.
I am very saddened to learn of Joe`s death. He joined my training platoon in mid 1963 at Bushfield. We then served together in B Coy, 3GJ (RB) and then 3RGJ for a while followed by RGJ. He was a fine Rifleman and although we never met up again after we left the Army I always tried to keep tabs on how he was getting along through mutual friends because when we served together he impressed me with his typical scouse `tell it like is` approach to life. My thoughts and sympathy are with his family and close friends at this sad time.
Till we meet again Joey, peace is now yours me old Mucker. Well done Jimmy for looking after him during the last few months. I know you will have a memorable sending off Joe. This wake will bring out a few more of the old RB Family as well as the RGJ Family. Jimmy you know where we are. RIP Mucker.
Shocked to hear the news of another Excellent bloke gone. Joey was my section commander in the days of fireman strikes in London. Remembered fondly. R I P and condolences to the family.

I'm very sorry to hear of the passing of Joe Simpson. I remember Joe returning to 1RGJ after his outstanding service where many are called but very, very few are chosen, he was certainly an exceptional soldier.
I bumped in to Joe on County Road in the mid '80s after I came out of the County Hotel when Ray Gerrard was the manager. Joe at the time was working for Customs and we had a pint and a laugh at some of the antics people got up to when they were trying to bluff him when they were caught red-handed smuggling.
Then like Pete Uden has already said, we had stopped at traffic lights when we took Joe Humphreys on his last journey and both Joe Sympson and Joe Humphreys were good mates. Obviously, Joe Humphreys wanted Joe Sympson at his farewell. That was a great farewell and I'm sure now that they are together with many great guys in the Final RV.
Joe, God Bless, you can rest easy now Mucker.
Billy Hughes
PS Jimmy Mathews, I know you are gutted but he could not have had a better man beside him, you are what he needed, his 'Chosen Man'. I know you will ensure he gets a great send off.
