Very sad to learn that Pete has passed away. I had known him since we were both 15 boy soldiers when we shared a barrack room in Z company IJLB Oswestry and he remained a friend throughout our 22 yrs service and beyond. My earliest memories of is that we were both smokers then and he did his best to help smoke as many of the 100 ciggies I had brought with me on our first night at IJLB before we were sick and they were confiscated the next morning. I had managed to hide some but we were caught later in the week by the orderly Sgt smoking behind the Gym who made us chew the rest until we were sick. It certainly made me stop smoking then.

He was a great character and rifleman.

My thoughts and condolences are with his family at this sad time.

It was with a heavy heart that I read of Pete's passing. We never served in the same battalion but knew each other by being in the same Junior Leader's intake at Oswestry in early 1962, then D Company up on the hill. Naturally our paths would cross as we attended courses or reunions, and we would always re-tell the story of when Pete borrowed my collarless black corduroy Beatles jacket for a night out in down town Oswestry.

A true Rifleman. My sincere condolences to Joyce and the family.

So very sad to hear of Petes passing. I first met Pete when we were Sergeants together at the Rifle Depot in 1976. He was always full of fun and always larger than life. We kept in touch after we retired, and I shall always be proud to call him a friend. Margaret and I send our deepest condolences To Joyce, Ann and the Children. We will be there to see you march off mate.

What sad news, Pete was the first Greenjacket I met. Oswestry 1962, I was at the end of my first week in "Z" Company and we were allowed to go to the 54 Club (so named as there were 54 regiments of the line then!!??) And there was Pete, we became mates from that point on!

Pete was the main reason I went to the Signals Pl, as a full screw you were under real pressure to get qualified (morse and all that!) and Pete was so helpful to both John Astbury and myself in those early days. The fact we both made it through the various signals courses and to the rank of Serjeant was in part due to Petes guidance and friendship.

Years later I was to find out for myself how good Pete was. I was DSM of the Signal Officers Course at Warminster, a 3 month very demanding course where Warrant Officers were expected to perform as well as the Officers if not better! Come the end of the course, my boss Major David Emsley said that Pete was by far the best of the Warrant Officers and indeed most of the officers too!!

Apart from the odd reunion I have not seen that much of him and to say I regret it is an understatement to say the least.

Pete was part of that 'inner circle' that you have in your life and I know that many feel about him in the same way!

You will be sadly missed. My sincere condolences to Joyce and the family

Writing this goodbye note to Pete is one of the saddest things I have ever had to do. Pete was a colleague, friend and mentor for over 40 years, and it is hard to realize that he has gone. The esteem in which he was held by all his friends is obvious from the messages preceding this one, but the close friendship I shared with Pete and Dicky Lucas will be special to me always.

Pete never tired of reminding me of how, when we were both full screws, he saved my life in Canada by refusing to rat on me to a certain C/Sjt who was extremely upset by something I'd done to his picket fence, which he was mistakenly blaming Pete for. That was Pete though; once you were his friend you were his friend no matter what.

I was lucky to have been his mate.

Pete, You were the first person I ever heard talking about Chapel Hat Pegs and of course that was typical of your great powers of description. I think you came to 2RGJ under a little bit of a cloud but soon proved to be a Ray of Sunshine.
It was great when you became Rations C/Sgt and supplied me with issue notebooks, otherwise known as 7764s ration returns.

Many appols for not making it today Pete, I would think though that there would be the very best of turnouts for you.

You were in your day the finest of teachers and many of us who thought we knew the art of signalling probably did not untill we worked with you as the boss.

Pete was my Platoon Sjt at the Depot, and made life 'fun' to say the least! His crowning glory (for me at least) was having the band play 'bubbles' at my passing out parade - oh yeah, he also 'made' me come to attention and stand in front of the Plattoon the whole time it was played too!

A decent human being and a Green Jacket to boot!

This may seem a little strange but i had to do a google search for Pete because he just popped into my mind because I couldnt sleep. I have been trying to find Pete for some time. I first met him in the 90s when he was the CSM of HQ Coy at Bielefeld. I was only a corporal then and was one of his Cpl instructors working with another Cpl called Sammy Boyle. We were both RCT. We both got on with him fantastically. He got us addicted to good coffee although Sammy and me always used to moan about setting the perculator up first thing in the morning. I remember Petes love for Irish whisky and felt the after effect s of a night on it with him. He had a huge record collection and could recite the date of every tune and where he was at the time it was released. One of the whisky sessions lasted into the very wee hours of the morning to the point I only bad an hour before I had to mount the guard. He phoned the guardroom as the CSM and explained that I had been called away to another duty. Now that is how to cover for someone! He kept pushing me to do well in the army and I am sure that it was because of him that I did. Worked my way through to Major and only just retiring.

I remember his love of, and expertise, in crosswords (much to the annoyance of Sammy who was very competitive about them). He used to tell some great stories. He used to joke about the possibility of being my father because he was stationed in Penang where I was born at the same time. I will never forget Pete and what he did to encourage me.

I'm sad that now I have found him he has gone to the big parade ground I the sky but after reading all of the posts im glad to have known him. I know its late (2014) but rest in peace Pete. Best wishes to Joyce and the rest of the family
