I have some very fond memories of Fred: our evening wrestling bouts on the top floor of "C" Coy block in Felixstowe in 1964 when he used to let me win sometimes; the saturday afternoon in the Sgts Mess bar in Celle in 1969 (sorry Ron, but you weren't there to stop us) when he led a group of us in the somewhat juvenile pursuit of chair bouncing (from one armchair to the next), which ended with Johnny Powell breaking his arm; having fun with him on various training courses as corporals and sergeants. The more I think about it, the more I could write.
He was great fun, a character, a gentleman and a great soldier. I will miss him.
Big Fred was big Fred from when I first met him in Celle in 1968.
Charismatic he most certainly was, but he was also the most professional of soldiers. He helped us young Riflemen without patronising us, always firm but fair .... he always did it, The Green Jacket Way.
He was still 'Big Fred' at the RB Assoc dinners of recent times, and will be sorely missed.
It is with great sadness to read of the passing of Fred, our paths crossed many times over the years, I have many wonderful memories of Fred in the RB,GJ, & RGJ, also at the Suffolk Branch. A faithful and loyal Riflman to the end.R.I.P Fred. Your fight is over, you will meet many friends at the final R.V. Our sincere condolences to Lally and family
It will be a great loss to the Green Jackets, & especially to the Suffolk Branch, i have memories like Trevor Anderson, although he forgot to mention the George club antics in cyprus, my sincere condolences to Lally

Big Fred, what can I say what a man he was always there to help, encourage and get the best out of everyone he met, sleep well bud. My heart felt condolences to Lally and all his family.
My sincere Condolences to Lally and the Family, on hearing the Sad News about Big Fred. (May He Rest in Peace). Will be Sadly Missed by All who knew Him.
I was very sorry indeed to hear of the death of Fred. My first encounter with him was when I joined the Mortar Platoon in Celle as a MFC. He and Joe Mills were both sergeants and were an amazing double act! God help any platoon commander who thought for one moment that he was actually in charge of the platoon - any feelings of superiority were soon dispelled by Fred and Joes' withering looks.
Many happy exercise hours were spent inside warm APCs with a brew constantly on the go. Fred was of the opinion that there was no need for anyone in the battalion to know his real location, simply a new, ficticious, grid reference every few hours.
I have many fond memories of Fred - he ran a great platoon and both Paul Trevethick and I learned the true meaning of "man management" from him.
SUCH AN ALL-ENCOMPASSING FIGURE WAS HE, IT SEEMS STRANGE THAT HE WON'T SUDDENLY TURN UP AT THE NEXT GATHERING, LAUGHING IN HIS BOOMING WAY, MAKING JOKES, KNOCKING BACK COPIOUS PINTS AND NEVER BEING THE "WORSE FOR WEAR".
FRED WAS A SOLDIER'S SOLDIER. WE ALL LOOKED UP TO HIM, FIGURATIVELY AND LITERALLY.
ANNE AND I ENJOYED HIS AND LALLY'S VISITS TO US IN BOTH NEW JERSEY AND VIRGINIA - WE COULDN'T HAVE ASKED FOR BETTER COMPANY.
To say that I am gutted is an understatement. I will always see Fred on the old codgers march past at the reunions at Winchester, Because Fred was a big man and his complete white head he stood out so well, but you could see that he was such a proud man and proud of the Regt that he served with honour. RIP big man.
My condolences to your family

RE: Death of Fred Edwards - Formerly RB, GJ, 3RGJ, 2LI, 1RGJ and Suffolk Branch Member - Funeral details now posted.
I first met Fred in late 1963 when I arrived in 3GJ newly turned out from the Rifle Depot and throughout the years that passed we met up from time to time in both the 3rd or Ist battalions.
He was a big man with an even bigger heart and my deepest sympathies go to Lally and his family. He was much admired and respected by all that he came into contact with and I am deeply saddened by his death.
A great rifleman who is already missed by many who will I hope be waiting to greet us when our turn comes.
another sad time as another true green jacket goes to join the others in the final rv rest in peace fred your duty done. condolances to family and friends
Please accept our condolences and our thoughts, which are with you and your family, as you try to fill the hole, which Fred's passing must have left. He was a 'Gentleman' and a 'Rifleman', who always left you feeling, that with him around, all is well.
He will be sorely missed by the Suffolk Branch, which he chaired until fairly recently, always supported our functions, whether in Felixstowe or in Winchester, and, with you, travelled a long way to do so.
I have fond memories working for you when 3RGJ had their spell with the UN in Cyprus. You were a big man with a big heart. You kept a watchful eye over this Rifleman and got me out of trouble on more than one occasion.
My mate Fred has passed but will never be forgotten I met fred in malaya in 1957 when we return to the uk he came home with me Sheila and I will miss him All my family send how love to Lally and all the family RIP Fred
