Sincere condolences to Fred's family.

Fred was Depot RSM and MT Officer in 1964/5 before he went to Cambridge University OTC.

Fred took me for my driving test on the 29  Army Youth Team, Commer minibus around Winchester.

Fred had trouble driving to drive the thing as it had a floor gear change for what should have been a column change.

Grating gears was almost obligatory until one got used to it. The first thing he said was-'you won't fail if you grate the gears!'

When we stopped for the Highway Code questions Fred decided the last one was best done back in the MT office as he needed  pencil and paper.

With the off-duty drivers lookingover his shoulder he drew an equal crossroads with no signs or markings.

'You're here,' he said pointing to one of the four inlets to the cross, 'and he's coming down there!' He pointed to the one on the left.

'Who gives way to whom?'  I hadn't a clue and said.

'He does Sir'.

'Good, Why?'

I didn't know why and said ' Because he's only a corporal.'

'Bloody Good answer. Passed. Now buy me a drink in the mess!'

I was glad to drink with you that day Fred. And will drink to your memory tonight. May you Rest in Peace!
