Death of Peter Bowring CBE

Peter Bowring died on 1 December 2012 aged 89.


He was born on 22 April 1923 and educated at Shrewsbury before he joined up at Winchester in August 1941 joining a KRRC recruit platoon in Bushfield Camp and subsequently 103 OCTU at Perham Down, Tidworth. After further training with 2MTB he was commissioned into The Rifle Brigade on 8 April 1942 and subsequently joined 7RB (1LRB) in April 1943 serving with them in Egypt, North Africa, Italy and Austria where he was mentioned in despatches. Throughout the hard fought Italian Campaign he was Acorn (Intelligence Officer) to Lt Col (later Maj Gen) Douglas Darling DSO*, MC* CO 7 RB.
From Austria Bowring went to Egypt and was sent to Acre (now Akko) in Palestine to the Middle East School of Infantry to attend a company commanders' course. He met his first wife in Egypt and was married at Cairo Cathedral.

On leaving the Army in 1946 he joined the family firm C T Bowring & Co Ltd. in 1947 and eventually became Chairman (1978-82) until they were taken over by Marsh & McLennan Cos. in 1980.

At the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950 he joined the LRBR at Sun Street. In 1952 he was part of the LRBR contingent chosen to line the route of King George VIs funeral cortege.

Trustee of several welfare, educational, arts and historical foundations.
Member of the Board of Governors of Shrewsbury School 1969-97.
Chairman Help the Aged 1977-1987. President 1988-2000
Chairman Aldeburgh Foundation 1982-89
Member of The Guild of Freemen of City of London.
Freeman of The Company of Watermen and Lightermen.
Master of The Worshipful Company of World Traders 1989-90.

Peter Bowring lived in London and his interests included sailing, motoring, listening to music, photography, cooking and travel.

Children: 1D (Theresa), 1S (Antony), [Antony (Anton) Bowring is currently involved with veteran explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes on an expedition dubbed The Coldest Journey which involves the first-ever crossing of Antarctica in the winter.]
