I have just learnt that John Willoughby, ex 1st Battalion CSM and MT Serjeant, passed away in Oxford on the 16th of December.
John's funeral will take place at Oxford Crematorium at 2.15pm, Friday 4th January.
John was a character and I have many great memories of him from when I was a young Rifleman. Many times he had cause to point out the error of my ways! He always managed to do it in such a way, that was humorous, and ensured I learnt a valuable lesson.
My thoughts are with John's family.

I am really saddened by the passing of one of the 'great' characters in the Ox & Bucks, 1 Green Jackets and 1st Bn The Royal Green Jackets! I remember him making half a dozen of us then 'young' Buglers stand to attention for half an hour outside HQ Block in Penang in 1963 at midday because 'someone' threw a bucket of water over him from the Balcony! Sorry John, it was me, you took in in good humour though!
My deepest sympathies and condolences to his family and friends!
Another one of the great men has gone> I remember John with fond memories. My condolences to John's family, friends and fellow riflemen of the OX & BUCKS.
Another good and true soldier of The Ox & Bucks, 1 Green Jackets marches off to the final RV, as a 1GJ Nig I recall many memories of John. May you rest in peace.

I remember John from my time with 5 RGJ - enjoyed my chats in the museum - a true veteran. I'll try hard to be there on Friday to see you off. RIP mucker
Another great Mucker gone but never forgotten. A character from the old days. May you RIP John, your pipe is extinguished on this mortal earth but will soon be lit again.
Symathy to all your Family and friends.
Sorry can't be ther tomorrow but will raise a glass of port in respect tomorrow after work.
My sincerest condolences to John's family and closest friends on their sad loss. I remember John when he was HQ CSM at the Rifle Depot in Winchester when i was a nig in 1968 and also met up with him when he was curator at the Museum at Slade Park when i was doing a stint with 5 RGJ. He was a brilliant bloke always had time for you and was a mine of information. I will miss him and his pipe filled with old shag, which probably was his trademark. RIP John.
Sad news indeed, I remember John very well when I joined 4 RGJ explaining to me the differences between Para Reg and RGJ, he had a wealth of information, what a gent he was. He will be truly missed, I will pay my respects to send him off to the final RV.
Very sorry to hear the news. John was very good to me when I was in the MT Platoon, and no doubt instrumental in my promotion to Serjeant. I remember him and I walking up from the MT area in Penang to the Sjts Mess at lunch time on the day I was promoted - him puffing on that pipe of his!
A great man in the Regiment. Who was known to many as "Shag" by the tobacco he used to stuff in that awful pipe. Many happy memories of a man who I believe was well loved and was a legend in the Regiment. My condolence to all of your family.
