Had the pleasure of talking to Danny a few weeks back as he was trying to help me with locating a member of the 2nd Battalion RGJ. I did not realise that he was suffering from cancer and in true Greenjacket fashion he kept his head up to the end. My condolences go his family and his close friends. Rest in peace Danny. Sad to hear the news of Danny's passing, I first met him in a recruiting office in Fulham Jan 74, not long after that I joined some outfit called the Royal Green Jackets. Good advice Danny, rest in peace.
Danny Krepka introduced me to life in Minden with 2RGJ by means of a Continuation Cadre.
After familiarisation with the Mechanised way of War, we were then instructed in the use of the "Yellow Handbags" ( boxes of Herforder Beer with a handy handle ) so treasured by Riflemen of 2RGJ in Minden, Germany.
Having a surname harder to spell than mine, and showing us that life in Minden with 2RGJ was an adventure, Danny Krepka did more than his bit.
Thanks Danny Krepka, I listened and I had a good Tour.
Known him since he was a boy, moving from Dublin to West Ham. A few years later he followed me into the local London Rifle Brigade cadets until we were both 15 when we joined up as juniors to go to the Rifle Brigade. I applied to go to the Depot and ended up in the IJLB followed by 1RGJ and Dan applied for IJLB and ended up at the depot followed by 2RGJ. Other then a two week holiday when he come to see me in Berlin I did not see him again until a reunion in London in 1988.
His daughter is married and has a lovely daughter, son Nick is doing well working in London, having been working out in Australia setting up the topless London bus tours in Sydney and the ACT while Cath, his ex-wife is enjoying life nursing again having worked in London, India and Australia...
The years pass so quickly....as schoolboys joining the LRB cadets we would never have believed anyone if they had been able to tell our our future... People come and go but the Regiment is a living, moving identity that carries all our genes and is what we have all made it into.
